January 28, 2026 β In an unexpected reveal, Google has given the public its first glimpse of a new desktop operating system, internally known as Aluminium OS, after a bug report on its Chromium Issue Tracker briefly included screen recordings of the unreleased software.
The videos, captured before Google restricted access to the report, show a desktop-style interface running on an HP Elite Dragonfly 13.5 Chromebook, powered by an Intel 12th Gen Core processor and labeled as Android 16. The leak was first spotted and archived by tech sites including 9to5Google and Android Authority.
Aluminium OS appears to merge elements of Android and ChromeOS to create a full desktop experience. The user interface seen in the footage includes a taskbar along the bottom, a centered start button, and familiar Android-style icons in the status bar at the top of the screen. Early signs also suggest support for splitβscreen multitasking and native access to the Google Play Store, hinting that Android apps will run seamlessly in windowed environments.
Google has not yet commented on when Aluminium OS will be officially announced or released, but the accidental leak marks the clearest public look yet at the companyβs ambitious push to bring Android to traditional laptops and PCs.
