Teslaโs robotaxis are taking the lead on affordability among autonomous ride services, but a new report reveals they are falling behind in convenience and speed compared to competitors like Waymo and Uber.
The analysis, conducted by rideshare comparison app Obi, examined 94,348 autonomous rides between November 27, 2025, and January 1, 2026, covering trips in San Francisco and the South Bay. The study compared key factors such as fare prices, estimated arrival times, and service efficiency across Tesla, Waymo, Uber, and Lyft.
Teslaโs Pricing Advantage
Teslaโs robotaxis clearly outperformed competitors when it came to cost. The study showed that an average ride in a Tesla robotaxi costs $8.17, significantly lower than other services. Lyft followed at $15.47, Uber at $17.47, and Waymo topped the chart with $19.69 per ride.
This pricing makes Tesla robotaxis the most budget-friendly autonomous option, appealing to riders who want to experience autonomous rides without paying a premium.
Convenience and Waiting Times
While Tesla wins on price, the service lags in convenience. Obiโs report found that Tesla robotaxis had an average estimated arrival time of 15.32 minutes, nearly three times longer than Waymoโs 5.74 minutes and significantly slower than Uberโs 3.28 minutes.
The findings suggest that Tesla passengers are trading cost savings for longer wait times, while competitors focus on faster and more efficient service.
Safety Measures and Human Drivers
All Tesla Robotaxi currently operate with a human safety driver on board, equipped with an emergency โkill switchโ that allows manual intervention if needed. This setup ensures passenger safety but may contribute to the slower response times compared to fully driverless services like Waymo.
Teslaโs hybrid approachโcombining autonomous software with human oversightโunderscores the companyโs commitment to safety, even if it temporarily impacts convenience.
Consumer Implications
For riders, the choice between autonomous services now comes down to price versus speed. Tesla is ideal for cost-conscious passengers willing to wait a bit longer for their ride. In contrast, Waymo and Uber provide faster pick-ups at higher prices, appealing to those prioritizing convenience.
Industry analysts suggest that Teslaโs strategy of low-cost autonomous rides could attract a large segment of the market, particularly in urban areas where affordability is a key factor. However, improving wait times and efficiency will be critical for Tesla to compete with other autonomous services on convenience.
The Future of Robotaxis
As autonomous vehicle technology continues to evolve, pricing, wait times, and safety features will play a decisive role in shaping consumer preferences. Teslaโs focus on affordability demonstrates that competitive pricing is possible, but convenience remains a challenge that must be addressed to capture a wider audience.
For now, Tesla dominates in cost, but convenience-focused passengers may continue to rely on competitors for faster rides.
