PlayStation Announces God of War Trilogy Remake and Releases New PS5 Game

God of War trilogy remake PS5

Sony kicked off the 20th anniversary of God of War with two major announcements during Thursday’s State of Play: a remake of the classic Greek saga trilogy and the immediate release of a new 2D game set in Kratos’ youth on the PS5.

Classic Trilogy Remake in Development

More than two decades after the original God of War launched on PlayStation 2 in March 2005, Santa Monica Studio confirmed that the classic trilogy is being remade. The project was announced with the participation of TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos during the Greek era of the series.

The remake is still in the early stages of development, and aside from the logo, no additional details have been shared. Sony has asked fans to be patient, emphasizing that it will take some time before further information becomes available.

God of War: Sons of Sparta Now Available on PS5

Alongside the remake announcement, Sony released God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new 2D action-platformer with 2.5D metroidvania-style gameplay, developed by Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with Santa Monica Studio.

The game tells a canonical story set during Kratos’ youth, following his training in the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. The narrative is penned by the same team behind God of War (2018) and RagnarΓΆk, with TC Carson reprising his role as Kratos’ narrator, providing continuity for long-time fans.

What This Means for Fans

These announcements signal a major celebration of the God of War franchise, blending nostalgia with fresh experiences for both new and returning players. While fans eagerly await the remake, Sons of Sparta offers an immediate way to explore Kratos’ formative years on the PS5.

With a mix of classic storytelling, modern gameplay, and rich lore, this marks a milestone in the 20-year legacy of one of PlayStation’s most iconic series. erome
